Understanding Heart Failure
Heart failure is a condition caused by the heart’s inability to pump or fill adequately. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, swollen legs and rapid heartbeat.
Who gets CHF?
Since the heart’s squeezing ability grows weaker with time, CHF is much more common in those age 55 and above. Other conditions or factors that put an individual at risk for heart failure include:
- Previous heart attack
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- Valve problems
- Family history
- Certain thyroid conditions
- Heavy alcohol or drug use
- African American
- Congenital heart defects
- Broken heart syndrome also known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy
CHF treatment components include
- Medication
- Dietary planning
- Daily monitoring and tracking body weight
- Routine provider visits
